Making gas better for all New Zealanders

Clarus has acquired businesses that have been driving innovation in New Zealand’s energy sector for nearly forty years. Investigating in innovative technology is part of Aotearoa’s journey to cutting emissions, and we firmly believe that the sustainability, reliability and affordability of gas will help get us there. That’s why we continue to invest in our operations and explore new, better ways of delivering gas to all New Zealanders, now and in the future.

SHAPING NEW ZEALAND’S GAS FUTURE

Graphic Boots Clearcut

The assets managed by Clarus have been at the forefront of innovation in New Zealand’s energy sector for nearly forty years. Through our leading businesses, Firstgas, Rockgas, Flexgas, and First Renewables, we have the future of gas in our sights – while ensuring Kiwis get the natural gas and LPG they need today, safely and reliably.

Firstgas

Based in the energy-rich region of Taranaki, Firstgas connects natural gas to homes, businesses, and large industry. Across the North Island, we own more than 2,500 km of high-pressure gas transmission pipelines and 4,800 km of gas distribution networks. Through our transmission and distribution networks, we connect over 300,000 homes and businesses to gas.

Rockgas

Rockgas is New Zealand’s largest LPG retailer, serving over 142,000 customers with a national network of 35 LPG suppliers and over 180 refill stations across the country. Reliable and highly efficient[1], LPG offers big savings over electricity[2]. We make sure it’s available wherever, however and whenever our customers need it – whether that’s delivering gas bottles to homes and baches or providing LPG tanks to businesses.

Flexgas

Flexgas owns and operates Taranaki’s recently expanded Ahuroa gas storage facility. By providing energy storage at scale, we help major gas users manage varying demands – which ultimately means our customers can better manage their energy supply and demand variability for years to come.

First Renewables.

First Renewables delivers renewable energy solutions, integrating renewable gas and electricity, to meet the needs of energy consumers across Aotearoa from local communities to energy-intensive industries.

Innovation

A history of Innovation

The assets owned by Firstgas were established in 1972 and Rockgas has been around since the 1930s.

Over that time we’ve worked hard to build and maintain a reliable gas pipeline and distribution network in New Zealand, including the Maui pipeline and the Ahuroa Gas Storage Facility – which we recently upgraded to provide increased gas storage and more flexibility for our customers.

The role of gas in a low carbon future.

We believe energy storage, like that provided by Ahuroa, will play a vital role in Aoteoroa’s low-carbon future. It supports the generation of renewable electricity (particularly in the winter months and over peak demand periods) and is becoming even more important with the addition of renewable wind and solar generation capacity.

Today, over 500,000 Kiwi homes and businesses use LPG or natural gas. Our vision? To continue to lead the delivery of New Zealand’s energy in a changing world, providing affordable, accessible energy to Kiwi families and businesses.

To do this, we’re exploring how we can deliver greener gas and support New Zealand’s goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Innovation through partnerships

Firstgas recently partnered with Gourmet Mokai – the NZ grower and exporter of greenhouse tomatoes – to supply and install a new 6MW LPG-fired hot water boiler in their greenhouses.

Firstgas recently partnered with Gourmet Mokai – the NZ grower and exporter of greenhouse tomatoes – to supply and install a new 6MW LPG fired hot water boiler in their greenhouses.

Because it is clean burning, LPG flue gas can be safely introduced into Gourmet Mokai’s greenhouses, where the small amount of CO2 produced increases plant growth and productivity. Meanwhile, the heat from the boiler provides efficient heating certainty in the months when their geo-thermal steam heating is down for maintenance.

Our transition

Driving New Zealand’s target of net zero carbon emissions

A member of the Climate Leaders Coalition of New Zealand, Clarus is committed to helping Aoteoroa achieve its target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Firstgas wants to make gas greener for Kiwis by carrying hydrogen and biomethane through our gas pipelines. Our goal is to achieve 100% net zero carbon gas by 2050, with the first step being a transition to delivering 20% hydrogen by 2035.
